ATKINS INSIDER: UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION NEWS

By Todd Atkins

Tito Ortiz

ZUFFA knows that Tito Ortiz had some kind of accident. A few people in the offices think this will be another 'I can't train for Chuck Liddell' excuse. As you know, Tito Ortiz has still NOT signed any bout agreement for UFC 47. Even though many people are talking as if a fight with Chuck Liddell is a done deal. He has told ZUFFA that he is just starting to train and test his hand, and then he will let them know how training goes.

Tito Ortiz is not in day to day contact with ZUFFA. Him and UFC president Dana White are not big buddies anymore. Tito likes to keep ZUFFA guessing on what his next move will be. Best case scenario would have him fighting and winning against Chuck Liddell, then accepting a HUGE payday to fight Randy Couture vs. Vitor Belfort winner.

Lorenzo Fertita thinks and hopes Vitor Belfort will win. Lorenzo is the one that closed the deal to sign Vitor Belfort when Dana White could not get it done. Lorenzo stepped in and made it happen. What ZUFFA really wants is Vitor Belfort vs. Tito Ortiz down the road. ZUFFA hates having Randy Couture as their champion and are looking for the next guy to knock him off. Word is that if Vitor Belfort wins, Tito Ortiz may in fact get an immediate title shot without fighting Chuck Liddell!!!!

PRIDE MAY STRIP FEDOR OF TITLE

Fedor Emelianenko (right)

PRIDE president Nobuyuki Sakakibara held a press conference on Wednesday with the Japanese media in Tokyo regarding the Fedor Emelianenko situation. Sakakibara threatened legal action against Nippon TV and Antonio Inoki, adding that he wants reparations for 'breach of contract', and that Fedor not participate in Inoki's show.

Sakakibara claims that Fedor signed a 'monopoly' contract lasting until October of 2004. Sakakibara is even threatening to use the Japanese version of the FCC to stop Nippon TV from airing Fedor's fight in the Inoki show.

Sankei Sports reports that DSE may try to get Fedor's visa revoked as well, which would cause problems for him to enter Japan.

THE JAKE R. REPORT: DRUNKEN ORTIZ WRECKS SUV!

By Jake R

Tito Ortiz

Before reading any further, please read our disclaimer first.

In a shocking Fightsport.com exclusive, this reporter can be the first to reveal of an intoxicated Tito Ortiz crashing his Cadillac Escalade into a light pole! As my source inside the Zuffa organization explained, Ortiz was well past the legal limit of intoxication when he wrecked his expensive SUV.

Even worse, the local police let Ortiz off without filing any charges because of who he was. It seems that the fame and reputation of being the reluctant former Ultimate Fighting Champion saved Ortiz from any sort of legal trouble.

As I was told by my source in Zuffa, recently Tito has been drinking more lately, far beyond his previous habits. This is understandable, as the loss to Randy Couture was certainly very psychogically damaging. Tito has also seen many people who he once considered as friends turn their backs on him since Tito's loss, including seeing his once relatively large fanbase evaporating.

As usual, keep reading Fightsport.com and I'll keep breaking the stories you won't read anywhere else.

PRIDE AMATEUR EVENT

The referees and judges of PRIDE have come together to assist in the development of the next generation of PRIDE fighters. The first Amateur Exchange Meeting was held in November. The goals were to foster exchange of MMA techniques and provide a sparring opportunity that would benefit the amateur fighters. Additionally, they made selections for fighters to appear in the first amateur PRIDE event, PRIDE Challenge 1. The event is scheduled to take place in January 2004.

Only 21 people were present due to the short notice. However, there was a large group of trainers, referees, Olympic athletes and MMA fighters present to teach the up-and-comers about weight training and conditioning, wrestling and sparring.

"I'd like to have an amateur competition about once every three months. It should be a neutral ring where fighters of any style and organization can test themselves, just like the real PRIDE", PRIDE Rule Director and Referee, Yuji Shimada commented.

"Fighters with no affiliations are also welcome. It's basically impossible for someone just starting out to jump into the main PRIDE event but we would like to raise some new fighters that are skilled enough to compete in THE BEST and DEEP'S Future Fight. That's the path to PRIDE. We want to hold events across Japan in order to bring in a wide variety of competitors." Shimada went on to explain that these exchange events will be held approximately once every two months, along with seminars put on by the coaches that have created today's PRIDE fighters.

IGNASHOV PREPARING FOR MMA FIGHT

Ignasov (left) sparring with Sam Greco.

As was reported earlier today, K-1 star Alexey Ignashov will be participating on the K-1 show scheduled for December 31st. The fight will be under MMA rules, effectively making it Ignashov's MMA debut.

Inside sources tell us that K-1 has signed Ignashov to a long-term deal, and hope to make him into the new Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic of MMA. Ignashov will still compete in regular K-1, but will also figure prominently into the new K-1 MMA promotion if his transition into MMA goes as planned.

Ignashov has been training MMA with Brazilian Marco Calcavante, who also helped to prepare Cro Cop for MMA. When asked to compare the two, Calcavante says that Cro Cop has a powerful left cross and high kick, but that Ignashov can do everything and is much more powerful. Calcavante adds that Ignashov is very dedicated and learning very quick, and feels that Ignashov can be an MMA champion in one year's time.

Former K-1 star Sam Greco has been busy working as Ignashov's sparring partner, and also learning some MMA from Calcavante as well. Greco feels that Ignashov has the right instincts for either K-1 or MMA, and feels he will do well in MMA.

Ignashov's opponent for the December 31st show will most likely be Japanese amateur wrestler Yoshihiro Nakao.

STEPHANE PATRY CAUGHT IN A LIE

On December 8th, 2003, Stephane Patry appeared on MMA Weekly radio to talk about his involvement with the banning of the Shut Up And Fight show. MORE INOKI VS. PRIDE NEWS

Antonio Inoki (right)

Our Japanese correspondent Shimura Funaki relates the following on how Antonio Inoki worked around PRIDE's supposedly exclusive contracts:

"First let me start by saying that the Japanese are obsessed with middlemen and agents. They will avoid doing straight-up business with clients if they can, preferring to always use a middleman. This is how most business, especially international business, is done in Japan.

PRIDE has been dealing with middlemen/agents for all of their fighters. All Inoki did was to get the fighters to leave the middlemen/agents that PRIDE has exclusivity contracts with, and then go to a new agent that Inoki can finalize a deal with.

That is what took place with the signing of Fedor Emelianenko to Inoki's show on December 31st. Inoki has a good relationship with Croatian agent Miro Mijatovic, who is the agent for Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic, and who is now the agent for Fedor Emelianenko as well.

Faced with this huge loss of face, PRIDE announced to the Japanese media that they are furious with Mijatovic, and that they may not work with any fighters who are under his management any longer. Mijatovic claims that the Fedor vs. Minotauro matchup that was scheduled for PRIDE's February 1st show is not scheduled to happen.

To add further to the matter of the Inoki/PRIDE war, Inoki is using his understanding of Brazilian culture (Inoki was raised for most of his childhood in Brazil) to also establish alliances with many Brazilian fight teams. His plan is to recruit Brazil's best fighters away from PRIDE, or to at least drive the price up for PRIDE to retain their services."

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
Vanderlei Silva vs. Yuki Kondo
Kazuyuki Fujita vs. Peter Aerts

Antonio Inoki also held an interview at Narita Airport and confirmed what most had already believed, that the loophole in Fedor's contract was due to PRIDE having an exclusivity deal only with Fedor's former team, the Russian Top Team, and not with Fedor himself.

To get around that hurdle, all Inoki had to do was negotiate with Fedor and his new team, the Red Devil Fighting Team.

PRIDE, INOKI, AND FEDOR NEWS

Fedor Emelianenko

The Japanese media reports that DSE has been embarassed PR-wise by the announcement from Antonio Inoki that PRIDE champion FedorEmelianenko is going to fight on Inoki's December 31st event at the Kobe Wing Stadium.

PRIDE management told the press that they will 'investigate' the matter and claim that they had a 'monopoly contract' on Fedor for his Japanese fights. DSE claims that Fedor was scheduled to fight Rodrigo 'Minotauro' Nogueira for the PRIDE heavyweight title on their February 1st show at Osaka Castle Hall.

PRIDE management says that they distrust Antonio Inoki and that they have not spoken with the Russian agent for the Russian Top Team yet to find out what is going on. Although this makes it seem that DSE does not know about Fedor's supposed move to the Red Devil fight team.

Antonio Inoki then told the Japanese media on Friday that he was ready to raise the stakes and jack up the performance fees for any promoters in Japan who are headhunting fighters.

According to Tokyo Sports, Inoki found a contractual loophole to get Fedor. PRIDE has an exclusive contract with the Russian Top Team, but Inoki claims that he didn't negotiate with the RTT, instead negotiating with Fedor individually.
