SUDO SPEAKS

Genki Sudo

The following is an interview with UFC and K-1 veteran Genki Sudo. Interview by Michael Afromowitz for the K-1 website):

K-1: You always make your way to the ring in a creative way. Does this reflect your true personality or is it simply a means of providing good entertainment for the fans?

Sudo: Well, we are not killing each other when we are fighting. It is all a form of entertainment. My entrance performance is to reduce the (negative) energy that any given audience has toward fighting.

K-1: How would you describe your "real life" personality?

Sudo: There are two different personalities of mine - a subjective one and an objective one. I think both are nice guys.

K-1: On New Years Eve, you had one of the more interesting matchups the sport has seen - a K-1 mixed martial arts rules fight with Butterbean. (Note: Sudo was victorious by way of heel hook submission at the 41-second mark of the second round.) He's a lot heavier than you and skilled in punching rather than in martial arts. What was it like fighting someone like him?

Sudo: I think he is a great fighter and a really great entertainer so we were able to be well engaged with each other in the ring. I would like to say thank you to him. I trained differently for this fight by looking into a lot of tactics and I thought highly of mind play.

K-1: A lot of people in The United States still talk about your UFC fight against Duane Ludwig. What is your opinion of the way the fight unfolded?

Sudo: The result was a loss. I just thought my ability lacked during the fight.

K-1: Many people want to see a rematch between you and Duane. How important is a rematch to you?

Sudo: He is a nice guy so I don't really want to punch him. (Laughs) But, when I have a rematch with him, I will definitely win.

K-1: Would you prefer to fight him under mixed martial arts rules again or would you rather have the rematch contested under K-1 rules?

Sudo: Maybe under Sumo rules. (Laughs) I'm just joking. Actually, whichever we are offered is okay for me. I don't have a preference.

K-1: What can fans expect to see from you in 2004?

Sudo: I will show you some very exciting matches that are full of love and peace.

BOB SAPP ON JIMMY KIMMEL SHOW

Bob Sapp

Zach Arnold reports the following:

"On Thursday on the ABC network, Bob Sapp appeared on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'.

"Not since Godzilla has Tokyo seen a monster of this size." Kimmel introduced Sapp as the person who "may very well be Mike Tyson's next opponent." Sapp got a huge, huge pop from the crowd - especially from Japanese women in the front row (who had good English skills). Sapp did his "hahahahahaha" call and the women went nuts.

Sapp went into a quick discussion about how he became popular in Japan, and then Kimmel showed a Bob Sapp action figure. Kimmel joked that there was some real action "going on there" - pointing to the huge crotch on the Sapp figure. Sapp told Kimmel that he drinks orange juice with sushi, and that in an eating contest he once ate 48 pieces of sushi. Sapp asked Amanda Byrnes to touch his head, and when she was about to do it, Sapp shriveled the skin on top of his head and Kimmel remarked, "It looks like a walnut."

Sapp told Kimmel that he has about 200 sponsor/product deals including children's products and commercials. Sapp relayed the story about a "handicapped man" who got trampled in a mob crowd going to see Sapp. Sapp went to pick up the handicapped man, the man pulls out his cell phone, and takes a picture and runs off.

Sapp said that the Tyson fight was all but official, that he didn't know where it would take place (the main site candidate is Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii) but that he would be allowed to 'kickbox' while Tyson would just do straight boxing.

MASATO SPEAKS

Masato

The following is an interview with K-1 Max champion Masato. Interview by Michael Afromowitz for the K-1 website):

K-1: How would you rate your performance against Vince Phillips in comparison to your performance in the World Max tournament earlier this year?

Masato: Well, a tournament and a one match fight are totally different so they are hard to compare. But, I'm satisfied with my performance against Vince. I was able to pull out everything in the ring and my strategy worked out perfectly.

K-1: What was it like fighting a professional boxer under K-1 rules for the first time in your career?

Masato: I enjoyed it a lot - fighting a boxer. I will accept challenges from boxers anytime, especially the present champions and, of course, I will kick their asses.

K-1: It seems that a lot of professional boxers have taken an interest lately in competing in K-1. What kind of place do you feel these fighters have in the sport of K-1?

Masato: We K-1 fighters welcome them any time. I don't know how well most of them can do in K-1. It seems that they are similar sports, but actually they are different sports. One thing I can say to you - they cannot defeat me. I am a fighter with a great Samurai spirit - not only with the physical strength, but also with a tenacious spirit.

K-1: Who in your weight division in K-1 or in the entire kickboxing world do you feel could give you the greatest test right now?

Masato: No one can compete with me in this circuit. I need new challengers.

K-1: At 24 years of age, you still have many years of fighting ahead of you. What kinds of things would you like to accomplish during this time?

Masato: I want to stay at the top of this circuit as long as I can and expand my popularity in the United States as well. Hopefully, this will help me become a movie star in Hollywood.

K-1: What would be your dream fight here in The United States if you could have your choice of opponent, location, etc?

Masato: I really want to fight at Madison Square Garden, with a fighter who gets the highest fight fee in the world. I will show what true strength really is. True strength is formed with physical strength and Samurai spirit.

'MINOTORO' SPEAKS

Rogerio 'Minotoro' Nogueira

Brazilian magazine 'Tatame' recently interviewed Rogerio 'Minotoro' Nogueira (not to be confused with his twin brother Rodrigo 'Minotauro'). Here's what Minotoro had to say (interview by Andre Araujo):

Tatame: There's nothing like starting the year off with a great victory...

Minotoro: That's true. Sakuraba is a big idol in Japan. This was the last fight of my contract with PRIDE, and now I am waiting for the negotiations.

Tatame: You were out of the ring for around eight months...how was it coming back?

Minotoro: It was not easy. During the first week I broke my finger and injured my groin. I visited the doctor and he told I shouldn't fight. I took some medicines and I felt better. I came back to my training, but even on the day of the fight I was not 100% sure I would be able to face Sakuraba. Thank God I was confident, and I didn't feel anything during the fight.

Tatame: You started the fight with a flying knee. Who's idea was that?

Minotoro: If you allow Sakuraba to grow during the fight, he can ruin your party. He is very technical. At that time, I ran to take over the center of the ring but I went too fast, and when I realized he was lowering his level, I went for the knee. It blew into his chest and my thigh hit his face. He fell down to the ground and I threw three more knees at him.

Tatame: You were also hit by a strong punch that cut you...

Minotoro: It was an uppercut that got in and cut my face right below my eye. I was afraid that the referee might stop the fight. I asked him to not stop the fight.

Tatame: Is it true you had some trouble making weight when you arrived in Japan?

Minotoro: I was weighing 227 pounds (103 kg), and they wanted me to weigh in at 209 pounds (95 kg). I called Doctor Ricardo Krause and he told me to drink only an isotonic sports drink and eat a supplement with magnesium for the whole day. I weighed 209 pounds (95 kg) on the day of the weigh-in, and I was feeling really weak. I recovered around 8-10 pounds (3-4 kg) and then I went for it.

Tatame: Would the final result would be different if the fight had had ten more seconds?

Minotoro: I think so. In the final round, I dominated and went for the knockout, with him only defending. I landed four kicks to his head right before the fight ended. I thought I had knocked him out, but it only turned out to be the final bell.

Tatame: You are in the same weight division as Vanderlei Silva. What needs to happen for this fight to take place?

Minotoro: I believe this fight will not take place right now. To face Vanderlei, I have to win some contender bouts. After all, he is the champion and won the Grand Prix. However, I think this fight will eventually happen, but I don't want to get too excited about it unless it becomes a reality.

ROQUE SPEAKS

Joao Roque (top)

Brazilian magazine 'Tatame' recently interviewed SHOOTO lightweight contender Joao Roque. Here's what Roque had to say (interview by Eduardo Ferreira):

Tatame: When will you and Alexandre 'Pequeno' Nogueira be fighting for the SHOOTO lightweight belt?

Roque: The thing is that Pequeno must make a title defense at least once a year, and the preference is for the number one contender to get the shot at him. Right now, Kid Yamamoto is ranked as the number one contender. They were supposed to fight in December, but Yamamoto broke his hand, and SHOOTO put Rumina Sato as his replacement in a non-title fight. I haven't seen the lightweight rankings yet, but I think I'm ranked number two.

Tatame: What if you were to fight Kid before facing Pequeno?

Roque: If I were to fight him first and win, then I would be the number one contender and would be able to fight Pequeno. They can also have me face Pequeno in a non-title bout. This would be good for SHOOTO, and it would be another way to get a title shot. If I beat the champ, I'd go up to number one, and I can fight Pequeno twice! (Roque laughs).

Tatame: In spite of the long wait, you seem very calm. Do you think you will get to fight for the title?

Roque: Of course I want to fight for the title. But if SHOOTO continues calling me to fight and I keep working my way straight up to number one, then that's also good. Obviously I want the belt. That gives me more prestige and more money.

Tatame: What would be your strategy to beat Pequeno?

Roque: Man, first I've got to be careful for that guillotine choke. But I've been fighting a long time, and I've got my own strategy...take the fight to the ground.

Tatame: You look better on the feet...

Roque: I've got two students that are also a Kickboxing black belts. They're helping me a lot.

Tatame: Nova Uniao's idea is to take the title in the main four SHOOTO weight divisions. Who has the most chance to take a title in the Nova Uniao team?

Roque: I believe in everybody there, but being a SHOOTO champ in the lightweight division is probably is the toughest job for my team. I hope to not disappoint them. It will be easier for Robinho at bantamweight, and for Louro at featherweight. They'll probably take it.

Tatame: You live in Brasilia. Why are you in Rio now?

Roque: I can fully dedicate myself to training here, and I can live to fight. Besides, of course, that in Rio I have Dede (Pederneiras) here to teach me.

Tatame: What will change with the integration of Ruas Vale Tudo and Nova Uniao?

Roque: In reality, it's already been integrated for a while now. The last time I was here, both teams were training together. The only thing left was for it to be official.

'SHAOLIN' WANTS TO FIGHT IN THE UFC

Shaolin (top)

Newly crowned SHOOTO 155-pound champion Vitor 'Shaolin' Ribeiro recently announced to the Brazilian magazine 'Tatame' that he would eventually like to fight in the UFC .

"I think that the UFC is a very interesting event. I've already fought three times in events that use a cage, and I feel comfortable with it. I have a reasonably good guard, and the fact that I'd be able to use elbows is very good for me", says Shaolin.

Shaolin will be at UFC 46 to see his friends Renato Verissimo and B.J. Penn fight. "I will bring my SHOOTO belt, and we will sit down and talk with the UFC guys", revealed Shaolin.

When asked about the possibility if facing his friend B.J. Penn in the UFC, Shaolin replied, "B.J. Penn fights at 170 pounds, and I fight at 155 pounds. There is enough room for everybody, and we are good friends.

LEE MURRAY SPEAKS

By Steven 'skelboy' Smith

Lee Murray (right)

The following interview is with Lee Murray and his manager Alexis Demetriades (interview by Ashley Webb):

AW: Who do you think are some of the most exciting fighters in the UK at the moment Lee?, apart from yourself that is?

Murray: That's what I was gonna say!. Jean Silva, Michael Johnson, James Zikic.

Demetriades: Alex Reid is a tough guy, and given training and a little bit of dedication he can go a long way. He's an exciting fighter, and a good quality fighter. What he needs is some more action.

AW: Lee's on his way to Las Vegas because that's where he needs to go to elevate his career. Do you think that the UK scene is capable of finding a similar popularity to that which you currently find in the US at any point in the future?

Demetriades: What you have to understand is that America is a huge place, and that because of that they can do shows all around the US all through the year and they can sell them out and its great. The UK is a very small place. If you do one big show everyone travels from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England and everyone comes to see the same show. Therefore you can't do too many of those shows because there's only a select amount of fans. But what I will say is that because of the quality of the shows we plan to put on in the UK the sport will gain popularity, although I couldn't say whether or not it has the potential to rival that of the US.

Murray: Extreme Force for example, that was the first show and it was sold out. It was at Wembley Conference Centre and that's quite a big arena.

AW: Obviously there had not been anything that big before in the UK with the exception of UFC 38?

Murray: Apart from the UFC that's the biggest show that’s ever been put on in England and we sold it out without a problem.

Demetriades: Just a quick extra point about Extreme Force. All the guys, including Lee, who fought and won a title at EF1 will be fighting and defending their belts against world class opponents on the next show. And also, if any of the guys on the forums have any ideas about what fights they want to see then let it be known, and if there's an overwhelming consensus of opinion then we'll get the fight for them.

AW: That's very good to know. OK, moving directly on from that, I was at EF1 last July and there was an absolutely amazing atmosphere, climaxing with your fight Lee. When you fought Pele the atmosphere was electric, and one I'd describe as a 'near riot', which I think was great. I mean, obviously a riot would have been bad, but a near riot made for an unforgettable night. Obviously we can all imagine how good that night was for you, and that you'd said before that Pele was a dream fight for you. How does the prospect of fighting in the UFC in Las Vegas compare to the Pele fight?

Murray: It's just another step really. Its what I've always trained for, to get to the UFC or Pride. Now I've finally got there I've just got to take advantage of the opportunity on the night, because I know that I'm probably not gonna get another shot if I mess up.

AW: So, given that you're already quoted before the Pele fight as saying Pele was a dream fight for you, is there now a new dream for you? Is there someone else you'd like to fight specifically?

Murray: There's no one else. All there is is the belt. That's my next target.

Demetriades: Anyone and everyone who stands in his way to that belt is now a dream fight.

Murray: That's what I'm going for now, the UFC middleweight belt. Anyone who gets in my way is gonna get knocked out.

AW: So if things go to plan where do you see yourself in a year from now?

Murray: If I get the fights I need within the next year to build towards the title, then I will have that title because I’ll be winning my fights without a doubt.

Demetriades: It's all a matter of Lee getting good coaching and good management and not doing anything stupid and keeping his head 'in it'. When his concentration is on then he's world class. Everyone has bad days and everyone fucks up. Its no problem to do that in the gym. The whole point is that the harder you train the better your chances of winning are going to be. Lee had worse days and harder fights than the Pele fight right here in this gym, he had a hundred days harder than that in this gym. The fight was the easiest part.

Murray: After the Pele fight people on the internet were saying "Yeah Lee was getting smoked in the first round and then he changed it round in the second". I wasn't getting smoked in the first round. I wasn't bothered by him at all. Everything he dished out to me, I was smiling at him and laughing at him.

Demetriades: Some people said Lee was running out of gas. I can tell you one thing, I have Lee in here constantly doing cardio, and anyone who knows me and my approach to cardio will know that none of my fighters run out of gas.

AW: I can definitely vouch for that!

Murray: After I'd returned to my corner after the first round and come back out for the second one of the commentators said "Lee seems to be blowing a bit". I was not blowing one bit. My cardio in that fight was 100%. I felt more tired after the fight than I did during it because of the emotion of winning and the relief of it being over and everything; that zapped me more than anything else. During the fight though I was fine. I could have kept on fighting all day.

AW: Absolutely. I think I asked you shortly after the fight what you called that jumping from the floor-style kick that you caught Pele with at the end of round one, my point being that I'd imagine that type of move takes quite a lot of energy to do?

Murray: Yeah it does.

Demetriades: What you've got to remember as well is that of everything Lee did in that fight, there was not one thing that he hadn't drilled and practiced in this gym at least 3-4 weeks before the fight.

Murray: Actually me and Jean Silva had been practicing that kick on each other a good few weeks before the Pele fight. We drilled that exact move, and it worked, and I caught him with it.

AW: What's a typical training week for you now leading up to the UFC?

Murray: I train twice a day every day. Today I did hill sprints in the morning, got up early with my boxing trainer and did hill sprints, then I’ve come here (London Shootfighters). I also do wrestling and boxing. I just alternate what I do each day.

AW: So you train six days a week?

Murray: I train every day. If I start feeling a bit tired and feel like I need a rest then I will have a rest every now and then.

AW: You're now on your way to the Las Vegas, the home of the UFC. I think a lot of American fans feel that the UK fighters are not of the same level as the US fighters, and you personally have been the subject of a lot of haters on various US-based forums in the past. How do you think you are viewed in the US now since knocking out Pele or do you even care?

Murray: I couldn't give a shit what they think about me. I know what I'm capable of doing at the end of the day and hopefully when I'm out there I’m gonna prove them all wrong, especially all the haters on the internet that are always bad-mouthing me.

AW: Well you won't change those type of people.

Murray: I know I'll never change those people, even if I win the UFC belt its never gonna change what those type of people want to think. You'll always have haters whether you're the champion or not, and you'll always have people on the internet talking shit about you.

Demetriades: I think that with regards the more negative guys on the internet, if they spent less time typing and more time training we might be a lot closer to having some more champions, and definitely a lot more guys participating in this sport. I think a lot of guys out there have potential and talent, and they waste it by spending time on negative things.

Murray: A lot of the US guys who talk about me on the internet haven't even seen me fight. They comment on someone they haven't even seen fight, so how can they then comment on me?

Demetriades: I'd just like to say that London Shootfighters' doors are always open to anyone. It's a friendly atmosphere. It's hard training but everyone's welcome, all fighters regardless of where else you train you're still welcome to come through these doors, and the only hard time your gonna have is gonna be the training. Also, London Shootfighters will soon be opening a full time training centre which we hope will become valuable resource for improving the all-round game of fighters of all levels who wish to train with us.

AW: A full time MMA training centre in the London area is an amazing prospect, and especially one run by yourself and Paul Ivens. Please keep us up to speed with developments as I’m sure there will be many people reading this interview who will be very interested to know what’s going on with this venture.

Demetriades: We'll definitely let everyone know once we're all set.

AW: Well, I know first hand how hard the training is at London Shoot, and I also know how hard you’ve been training for the Rivera fight, so on behalf of all the UK MMA fans out there, good luck in Vegas - no doubt we'll all be screaming at our tellys willing you on to a win.

Murray: Thanks a lot.

AD: Thanks.

NEW MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY 'NEXT GENERATION' OPENS IN LONDON

The "Tito Ortiz running away from Lee Murray" mug by skelboy.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 'SKELBOY' ANNOUNCES OPENING OF NEW MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY, 'NEXT GENERATION'

LONDON, ENGLAND -
A new martial arts school, to be known as 'NEXT GENERATION', will be opening up in London's Balham district.

Area bouncer and martial arts instructor, Stephen 'Skelboy' Smith, plans to open the school in the next few months, with classes beginning immediately. On offer will be both adult and child courses in various different fighting arts, including 'No Holds Barred' fighting, boxing, submission wrestling, and also 'Bastard Club', a brutal weekly class on lethal and realistic streetfighting techniques.

Having been involved with martial arts for most of his life, chief instructor 'Skelboy' lists some impressive credentials. Describing his reasons for studying the mechanics of combat, Skelboy says: "I been fightin' ever since I were three years old, mate. I bashed me cousin, Billy, over the head w'one o'them Transformers. It were that bloke what turns in't' a stereo, an' he had t'get stitches. I had t'go t'one o'them child psychologists 'n'all. That were when I knew I were gonna end up involved w'martial arts, mate, although not always w'Transformers - y'can't rely on weapons t'defend y'self when yer in the shower or havin' a piss."

Because of this lifelong commitment to the study of fighting, 'Skelboy' lists some impressive credentials. In his own words:

"Well mate, everyone knows I done door work since I were 16 an' am now one o'the UK's top workin' hard men (an' I do work hard). On top o'that, I been boxin' ever since I were eight, an' doin' submission wrestlin' since I were fourteen just after the UFC came out. I weren't 'inspired' to be like Royce Gracie like most o'them other twats, I just wanted t'learn how t'beat up punters better. I trained at all London's best gyms an' tapped out almost everyone, so now I think it's time t'open me own fuckin' school. Don't like it, mate? Fuck off, then."

'Skelboy' is also unwilling to hold back his opinions on why those seeking to learn martial arts should come to his school before any other.

"First of all, mate, I'm much harder than you an' all your mates - even the big fat one that y'think is really tough 'cos y'fuckin' stupid - so if y'pay me, I can show y'how t'be proper hard 'n'all. Second, I in't a complete twat like some blokes y'could train w' - if y'get a fight in PRIDE but y've got some outstandin' fuckin' warrants, I won't pretend t'be y'mate an' then call the rozzers t'come an' fuckin' arrest y', then go t'PRIDE an' try t'fight in y'place, will I? Also, I reckon this fit bird what I felt up last night will come an' hang out around the gym, so y'can look at her baps while y'fuckin' trainin', can't ya? No extra charge for that one, mate. Plus I shagged one o'the birds from The Fast Food Rockers at new year, she were crap."

As far as gym rules and etiquette are concerned, 'Skelboy' is adamant that 'NEXT GENERATION' will be tailored to a more realistic style of training, but also with a strong sense of community and respect between participants:

"At my gym we in't gonna train w'no fuckin' big boxin' gloves or gumshields, 'cos that's gay. I don't mind if darkies or arabs come t'fuckin' classes, as long as they pay in cash upfront an' don't want t'wear one o'them turbans or whatever the fuck they're called, mate. Oh yeah, no knobs allowed - an' no fuckin' refunds if y'pay an' then turn out t'be one. Parents are gonna have t'sign a form or some shite like that, 'cos I in't gonna give y'no money if y'kid annoys me an' I punch him in the face an' tell him t'shut up."

After the school opens, 'Skelboy' hops to make his 'No Holds Barred' fighting debut before the end of summer. Discussing potential opponents, he has some strong words for other professional fighters and martial arts instructors.

"I'll probably have t'fight someone who's shite t'start off, so don't expect me t'have a hard time or nothin'. M'next goal is t'fight in America against someone who's rubbish but what them twats think is really good, 'specially if it's someone what can't take a punch good or defend submissions. One o'me mates trained w'that Chris Brengan or whatever the fuck he's called, the one that were in that PRIDE for small blokes, an' said I'd beat him easy an' that he looked like Skeletor except much smaller. I reckon I could tap him out without to much hassle. I weigh about thirteen stone now, so if I stop eatin' pies an' McDonald's I should make the weight easily."

'NEXT GENERATION' is located in Balham, London. Stephen Smith can be contacted by e-mail at skelboysmith@yahoo.com.

RIVAL NEWSSITE CLUELESS AGAIN

Van Vader

Dave Meltzer reported this week in his Wrestling Observer newsletter that pro-wrestler 'Van Vader' a.k.a Leon White has signed a 6-fight deal with DSE/PRIDE worth USD$400,000.

The contract will see Vader participate in a mix of mostly pro-wrestling matches in DSE's pro-wrestling show called 'Hustle'1', and the occasional MMA fight on their PRIDE show. Vader is already scheduled to do an MMA fight on the PRIDE Bushido show, scheduled for February 15th.

Another consistently incorrect MMA newssite reported that it was 'confused' as to how Vader would be doing pro-wrestling matches in PRIDE. As usually seems to be the case, this bumbling newssite did not know their facts, or even bother to research them.

As usual, stay tuned to Fightsport.com for all the real news, all the time.

VANDERLEI SPEAKS

Vanderlei Silva (top)

PRIDE light heavyweight and GP champion Vanderlei Silva had the following quotes for Brazilian magazine 'Tatame':

Vanderlei on whether he will move up to the heavyweight division soon: "It will all depend on what kind of offer PRIDE makes. As I am now, I can realistically bulk up to 105 kg (231 pounds), so how can I cut down to 93 kg (205 pounds)? But there are still many people left at light heavyweight that I can face."

Vanderlei on the Randy Couture vs. Vitor Belfort matchup: "That is going to be a huge fight. Randy has many big victories, but I am certain that Vitor is preparing himself very well."

Vanderlei Silva on possibly facing the UFC light heavyweight champion in a belt unification bout: "Such a fight would be awesome. I am certain that my fans would love to see that."
