WALLID SPEAKS

Wallid Ismael (left)
Brazilian magazine
'Tatame' recently interviewed
Wallid Ismael. Here's what Wallid had to say (interview by
Andre Araujo):
Tatame: Are there any new developments for Jungle Fight 2?
Wallid: The scenery will be part of the attraction. We've built a snake that is 10 meters long, and the fighters will come to the ring inside of the mouth of a 15-meter tall black panther. The card is unprecedented in Brazil, with fighters from France, Japan, the United States, and Russia. It will be one if the biggest events ever seen in Brazil. We're going to have an acrylic ramp with lights and everything. The production will be as good as PRIDE and the UFC. This part of the show is being taken care by "Artisans of Parintins". We have the support of the local community, the state, and the local government. We're going to have good coverage with in eleven Brazilian states and Sportv. The thing is bring attention to the Amazon and the city of Manaus, which is a beautiful city.
Tatame: The attendance and numbers for the first Jungle Fight was very good...
Wallid: Jungle Fight 1 did a record number of viewers on Pay-per-view, and beat all the events aired in Brazil, including Pride Dynamite!. Everybody is aware about the Amazon, and our event is the only one in Brazil that features fighters from around the world.
Tatame: Are you guys already planning a third edition?
Wallid: Yes, it will be held on September 25th. We are negotiating with China and Qatar. We are also talking to Las Vegas too. Everything for this year. The only thing is to wait and see.
Tatame: During the first Jungle, former Japanese senator Antonio Inoki swam in the River with piranhas, and then entered the ring with a monkey his shoulder. What will he do this time?
Wallid: It's a surprise...we don't know for sure yet, but I can tell you we are working on it. For sure he will surprise everyone once again.
Tatame: Why do the matches take so long to announce, considering that there's only a few days left until the event?
Wallid: We had some problems with three foreign fighters who are injured, but I'm already working on their replacements. Some of them are now having some visa problems. The job of putting the card together is a complicated thing. I always hated these kind of delays when I used to only be fighter. I used to think it was absurd, but today I see that it is really a crazy job. It's very difficult to keep together a card in an event of this kind...but I want to make it clear that I have been talking with the fighters every day, and everything will be fine.
Tatame: What is the public response for the event?
Wallid: Jungle Fight 2 will be aired by Sportv in Brazil, Japan, Portugal, and many other countries. In fact, we did it really well in Portugal with a 7.3 rating against 7.5 for soccer (Portugal's national sport). A big step. About the tickets, they are available at Studio 5, as of 11:00 today until May 15th. The prices are 20, 50, 100, 150 and 200 reais. The front row seats are already sold out.
Tatame: Some time back, Brazil Dojo accepted an open challenge from the Brazilian Top Team...how did that turn out, considering that Carlos Barreto (BTT) will be on the Jungle Fight 2 card?
Wallid: Our relationship is great. In fact, I talked with Bebeo (Duarte) two days ago. We are all fine and its past history.
Tatame: And regarding Brazil Dojo, what is the real situation of the team that you created around the time of the first Jungle Fight?
Wallid: The team is being reformulated. We are evaluating the fighters and want to build a solid team, but everything is very uncertain at the moment. Brazil Dojo is something I like doing. It's not about doing business. But in due time, like everything I do in my life, the team will return and we will go to the top. I will beat down all those who talked bad about me.

SAPP AND K-1 VEGAS AT THE TOP OF JAPAN RATINGS

Bob Sapp (right) continues to draw ratings.
Video Research Ltd. released its ratings for Japanese television during the first week of
May when the
K-1 Vegas show was televised.
The show did a very good
15.0% rating, with the
Bob Sapp vs. Tommy Glanville fight doing a fantastic
26.5% quarter hour rating.
The shows overall rating placed it as the
fourth highest rated sports show for the week. The first three sports were taken by
Yomiuri Giants baseball games, which is Japan's most popular and followed baseball team.
The high ratings are a good sign that
K-1 can stage high profile shows in the
US, and still draw top ratings back home.

MC DONALD SPEAKS

Micheal McDonald
Micheal McDonald was recently interviewed by the K-1 website. Here's what McDonald had to say (interview by
Micheal Afromowitz:)
K-1: So, how are you feeling?
McDonald: I'm alright. I was back in the gym Monday - back to work. I feel good and I felt great for the fight.
K-1: I think everyone wants to know how you did it against Marvin Eastman. How did you come back the way you did?
McDonald: Well, when I went down I was fine. For me, it was like a flash knockdown. When I got up, I wasn't even shaky at all. I got up and kept my composure and just went after him.
K-1: So, you had your feet underneath you in the second round?
McDonald: Yeah, I was 100 percent fine. It was just a real flash. I went down and was like 'Oh.' So, I just took my time, took the count, and got up. Then I did what I needed to do to win.
K-1: What did you see in Marvin that helped you turn the fight around so quickly?
McDonald: From what I heard prior to fighting him was that he's aggressive and comes to fight. I wasn't sure what his conditioning would be - whether he would try and finish the fight early or if he'd have the conditioning for the second round and the third round. A lot of guys like to get the job done quickly and get out. After I got up, though, he came after me again. I covered myself and then went after him.
K-1: This is your third K-1 tournament title in North America. What's your secret to success?
McDonald: I think it's just a matter of trying not to get injured, being smart, trying to understand strategies and the science of K-1 fighting - not just throwing a punch and throwing a kick, but understanding the science of it. It's kind of like chess. You can jump the guy, but you can also get jumped yourself.
K-1: Kind of like the game rock, paper, scissors?
McDonald: Right. So, you got to understand that and know your distance and your timing. Also, it's important to just lead a clean life and stay healthy and things will hopefully fall in place. For me, I don't drink; I don't smoke or do anything like that. I try and eat as good as I can. I try to work on new stuff every time. The more you have, the better. Mind you, I may work on 20 different techniques, but I may only use three in the ring or use the ones that I'm comfortable with or know that I'm good at. But, sometimes there are also openings for something new. With Marvin, from when the bell rang, I saw he was open for a lot. So, I thought I'd just move around with him for a little bit before I start opening up.
K-1: A lot of people discredited your ability to come out on top after your results last year. How did the critics' words factor into your motivation to win this tournament?
McDonald: Well, last May I just felt like I made a mistake. It was my fault. Carter beat me on points, but I didn't get hurt. I couldn't do what I wanted to do, basically. As far as this year, I wouldn't say I trained harder. I just trained my norm and I said I'm gonna do it this year. I didn't work on anything different. I didn't change anything.
K-1: Dewey Cooper fought a great tournament as well. Against you, though, he had trouble putting together any kind of real momentum. What do you think it was about that matchup in terms of styles that helped you dominate the fight?
McDonald: With Dewey, I said to myself 'He's gonna run. He's gonna be on his bike,' which is what he did. He was using angles and lateral movement - a lot of it - like a boxer would do. He didn't really want a part of me. He just wanted to get a few kicks and a few combinations in and run. So, I said 'If I cut him off, I'll get him. Or when he comes in, I'll blast him.' The first time I threw a head kick at him, he woke up. If his guard wasn't as tight, he would have been knocked down, or maybe even knocked out. He was giving me a lot of time to do what I wanted to do. I had a lot of time to work and think.
He wouldn't stay in front of me. He would go, which is good. You don't want to stay in front of somebody. For his part, he fought a smart fight. But, winning on points he wasn't going to do because, when I bang him, I'm gonna get a lot more points than he would by doing what he was doing.
K-1: You're 39 years old, but you don't look it. Do you get that a lot from people?
McDonald: I do. I don't tell them my real age, though. To me, it's not important, you know? Whenever I have to fill out an application, I put 26. (Laughs) People always ask me when I'm going to retire or if I think I'm too old. I just say 'You know what? I'm at the age where I'm getting up there, but my body doesn't feel like it.' If I'm starting to get knocked out or hit too much, that's telling me something. But right now, that's not really happening.
K-1: Can we expect to see you back in action during the summer?
McDonald: I was just asked if I wanted to fight in New Zealand in June - in the K-1 Oceania event - but that's sort of tentative right now. I've got to speak with K-1 this coming week to see what's going on.
K-1: If you come back to Las Vegas in the summer for a K-1 fight, what can we expect to see from you?
McDonald: Basically, I just want to come and give a good performance and give the people their money's worth and hopefully come out victorious again.

Cacareco on the Matyushenko challenge: "Matyushenko drew attention to his name with this open challenge. So, I accepted the challenge by any terms he wants, anytime, and anywhere."
Cacareco on almost fighting Matyushenko a few years back: "We were supposed to fight for the WEF belt a few years ago, but the event went under and we get to fight each other for the title."
Cacareco on how he will beat Matyushenko: "I have become a complete fighter training here with the Gracie Barra Combat team. I have added more tools to my submission game, and I have improved my game on the feet so I am ready to beat him (Matyushenko) by submission or KO.
I do not think he can put me on my back on the mat. I can avoid that and I can take him down. I am confident. I hope there is an event interested in signing this match soon. I am ready, and I know he is too"
Cacareco on Matyushenko's nickname: "I do not know how he got his nickname, 'The Janitor', but against me he will not be cleaning up anything. I will be his worst nightmare."
