PENN TO SUE UFC

B.J. Penn

B.J. Penn and his attorneys, Raleigh, Hunt and McGarry, P.C. of Las Vegas, Nevada, officially filed a Complaint with the District Court, Clark County, Nevada on July 8, 2004 against Zuffa/UFC, alleging that Penn was wrongfully stripped of the UFC welterweight title by Zuffa/UFC. Penn won the title by submitting reigning champion Matt Hughes via rear-naked choke January 31, 2004.

The Complaint goes on to allege that in stripping Penn, Zuffa breached its contract with Penn. Penn also asks the court for injunctive relief, which could restrain or prohibit Zuffa from conducting a UFC welterweight championship bout without Penn. In other words, Penn is attempting to block an October 22 welterweight title fight between Matt Hughes and Georges St-Pierre.

Penn has asked the court to enter judgment against Zuffa according to proof plus interest as authorized by contract and/or law, for consequential damages in excess of USD$10,000, for reasonable attorney's fees and costs, for the return of the UFC welterweight title, and for declaratory and injunctive relief, among others.

BRAZILIAN TOP TEAM TO STAY IN PRIDE

Ricardo Arona

Mario Sperry talked with Brazilian magazine 'Tatame' and announced that the Brazilian Top Team have renewed their contracts with DSE/PRIDE.

According to Sperry, both Rogerio 'Minotoro' Nogueira and Ricardo Arona extended their contracts with DSE/PRIDE for one and a half more years.

Paulo Filho, Luis 'Buscape' Firminho, and Fabio Mello all signed one year deals, with each fighter guaranteed three fights during the course of the one year deal.

Sperry added that DSE/PRIDE was also interested in signing Milton Vieira, but a deal could not be reached as they wanted him to fight as a middleweight.

Sperry said that it would be impossible for Vieira to move up to middleweight, and that he would try to get him a deal to compete in K-1 'Romanex' promotion instead.

POSTAL CONNECTIONS: MMA REALITY SHOW UPDATE

By Tape Lord

Guy Mezger (right)

Hello my friends, back in January I reported first about a reality show that will feature regular people fighting against MMA fighters. Not the UFC/Spike show, but another show tentatively titled 'So You Want To Be A Badass?'

In an update to that story, my postal connections inform me that the show's producers are now seeking contestants for the show.

The show will give the contestant each week the chance to choose from one of the five fighters on the show and throw down in a cage. If the contestant wins or goes the 5 minute distance, he gets USD$25,000 The winner will also gets a contract with the Lion's Den. (editorial comment: LOL)

Fighters who will be featured on the show are Guy Mezger, Ken Shamrock, Travis Lutter, Alex Andrade, Tra Telligman, and Pete Spratt.

Rogerio "Minotoro" Nogueira

Rogerio 'Minotoro' Nogueira (not to be confused with twin brother Rodrigo 'Minotauro') announced after his victory at PRIDE Bushido 4 that he would like to face Hidehiko Yoshida.

Sources in the Japanese media are saying that this matchup is a definite possibility, but that it will most likely not happen until 2005.

Yoshida is currently nursing a shoulder injury and most likely won't be back until later in the year.

SHAMROCK PROVES PAY-PER-VIEW KING FOR UFC

Ken Shamrock

The 'Wrestling Observer' newsletter reports that an early figure for the UFC 48 show, headlined by Ken Shamrock vs. Kimo Leopoldo, esimates it doing around 110,000 pay-per-view buys.

Both of Zuffa's highest rated UFC shows on pay-per-view (UFC 40 and UFC 48) have now included Ken Shamrock.

UFC 40 which featured Ken Shamrock vs. Tito Ortiz did around 150,000 pay-per-view buys. Whereas UFC 44, without Shamrock, but featuring Tito Ortiz losing his belt to Randy Couture, did only 80,000 pay-per-view buys.

Adding more evidence for Ken Shamrock's pay-per-view supremacy is the fact that UFC 48 recieved very little advertising and publicity dollars from Zuffa, yet comfortably sold 110,000 pay-per-view buys. Whereas UFC 44 and UFC 47, headlined by former poster boy Tito Ortiz, recieved a lot of financial support from Zuffa in terms of advertising and publicity, yet both shows could not break past 80,000 pay-per-view buys.

HUNT TRAINING MMA AND JIU-JITSU IN BRAZIL

Mark Hunt

The Brazilian media reports that former K-1 champ Mark Hunt is currently in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, training in both MMA and Brazilian jiu-jitsu with the Gracie Barra team.

Some of Hunt's training partners at his Gracie Barra morning sessions include Renato 'Babalu' Sobral, Daniel Gracie, Gustavo 'Ximu', and 'Pe de Pano'.

Hunt then spends the afternoon learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu from Marcio Feitosa.

Renzo Gracie, who watched Hunt roll, had this to say about the former K-1 champ, "I know he's a talent. If he trains hard for a few months, I believe he can become a PRIDE winner".
